As car owners/drivers, you are obliged by law to have motor insurance. This must be adequate at least to pay damages to a third party, be it to their person or their property. It is illegal to travel in Ireland as a driver without minimum cover in relation to liability to others.

If you are coming to Ireland to take up residence you can exchange your driving licence for a full Irish driving licence and you will not need to do a driving test.

If you bring a vehicle into Ireland from abroad you must register it and pay Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) by the end of the next working day following its arrival in the State.

If you brought your car from abroad and you're intending to stay in Ireland from more than six months, you should first pay VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax), which depends on a number of factors, including age and engine type.
