Credit Union

There is one more institution where you not only can open a current account, but also  get a  loan, insurance, financial money spending advice, use money transfers and bureau exchange.
A credit union is a group of people who save together and lend to each other at a fair and reasonable rate of interest. Credit unions offer members the chance to have control over their own finances by making their own savings work for them. Regular savings form a common pool of money, which in turn provides many benefits for members. A credit union is an organisation of people - for people. It exists only to serve its members - not to profit from their needs. Credit unions are non-sectarian and non-political.
It has been shown throughout history that by working together people can achieve far more through co-operation than by individual effort. The success of the credit union movements worldwide is a clear illustration of this. To join a Credit Union is as easy as joining a bank; all you have to do is apply for membership in the  credit union near where you live or work. When applying for membership you will be asked for proof of ID and proof of address just like when you open a bank account. Depending on the rules of your local credit union, to be a member there will be an entrance fee of not more than €2 and you will need to hold a minimum savings of between one and ten shares. After this you should continue saving regularly - even small amounts. Members of credit unions have some benefits associated with their membership, such as encouragement and advice on a regular savings programme, loan availability at relatively low rates of interest, the knowledge that their own savings are being used in their own community, a right to know how the credit union is being run, and how it is performing, and with this right comes the responsibility to contribute to the effective and fair running of the credit union. Indeed you can also put yourself forward for election to the board of directors/supervisors committee if you feel you can make a contribution to the overall running of the credit union. So credit unions offer you some more than just a current account, loans and savings – it offers you a way to integratein to your local community, get trust, responsibility and probably respect.
