They achieve this through their professional staff; who, through their training and experience, are able to deal with the problems encountered by their members in the course of their working life. This is the major strength of the trade unions. The main benefit of being a member of a trade union is in knowing that this wealth of expertise and experience is available to each individual member of the Union and also the comfort of knowing that the support of your colleagues in the workplace, who are also trade union members, is always there if needed. Without trade union support there would be no protection, no security, no rights or representation for workers in any employment. Trade Unions and their members are the guardians of the gains made by their predecessors and are charged with maintaining and, where possible, improving the conditions of employment for future generations of workers.
