The College is the largest College of further education in Ireland with over 2000 day students and is the biggest provider of courses for school leavers and indeed mature students.
The main feature of the College is that as well as offering strong academic programmes, the College prides itself on being responsive to the needs of students as well as employers in the Munster region. It provides over 40 innovative courses which are linked with established Professional Institutes and all students take examinations set by these Institutes. These external examinations and qualifications guarantee the standards of the courses and ensure that the skills which the students develop, enables them to make the most of their careers.
The College provides a valuable insight into the world of work and students who may not have shown significant potential during the Leaving Certificate very often find that the subjects which they now embark on in the College of Commerce are job oriented in conjunction with the work experience placement where over 1500 students are placed in work experience throughout Munster. Thus, they obtain a practical insight into the real world which enables them to be more flexible and motivated to study to enable them to progress in the modern workforce.
Interestingly, the College is also one of the main leaders in providing progression to 3rd Level Institutes and has been a leader in providing links with higher education. Many students progress to these 3rd Level institutions on the basis of the examination results obtained in the Cork College of Commerce. Special arrangements exist with the University College Cork and with Cork, Tralee, Waterford and other Institutes of Technology. In addition, the College has many excellent progression routes to degrees with Universities in England and Wales as well as making special arrangements for those who follow the pre nursing course for Universities both in Ireland and in England.
Thus, it is possible for a student who has a pass Leaving Certificate to follow a course in the College of Commerce and to end up with either a degree in Accountancy, Auctioneering, Business Studies, Law, Childcare ,Nursing Studies and many others. It is a feature of Further Education Colleges and the Cork College of Commerce in particular that many students who might not necessarily excel in the academic leaving Certificate programme suddenly find that they are now on a course which enables them to “take off and specialise” since they now find that they really enjoy the mixture of academic and practical work provided by the College.
