The "Huguenot Quarter" in Cork is a small area just north of St. Patrick Street, between Carey's Lane and French Church Street. These are the streets where Huguenots, or French Protestants, settled after fleeing the religious persecutions of Louis XIV of France. Back then, around 1700, Cork was a small port city of no more than 25,000 inhabitants, and many of the areas within the two branches of the river Lee were still unclaimed marsh. Therefore, that area was populated by influent, wealthy people of French origin. Although Huguenots in Cork never numbered more than 300, some of them left their names in Cork history: Lavitt's Quay, for instance, comes from the name Lafitte, who ruled as Lord Major of Cork.
Let’s imagine a midweek night. You are walking along the quay after a pleasant dinner with some friends. It's late, the road seems deserted and fog is covering the river and hiding the houses around you.
