The Museum in Fitzgerald's Park

The photography is fantastic and is a great insight into how Cork used to look in the late 19th and early 20th Century.  It is a historic look at the streets, people and famous landmarks of the city centre, and you can even spot the buildings that are still around today.  Also at the museum you can see prehistoric implements found around Cork City. Some of these were found in the years BC and show you how people used to live in those times together with the instruments they used for everyday living and working.  I was amazed to see a prehistoric toothbrush!  Another exhibition at the museum shows how our travelling community lived, presenting their cooking implements and stories provided by the travelling community along with a magnificent barrel-top caravan on display.  To top it all you can then view the casts that were made for figures which adorn Cork’s famous St Finbarr’s Cathedral. These casts were made first by the architect who designed the cathedral, and then sculpted into the cathedral itself.

You can get to Fitzgerald’s Park by walking down the Mardyke, which is across from  University College, Cork on the Western Road. The Museum is opened from 9.00am to 1.00pm and again at 2.15pm to 5.00pm, and best of all there is no fee to enter
